Pirates Purchase Dwight Childs from Independent League

Catcher Dwight Childs (Can-Am League) was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He will likely be used as extra catching for spring and minor league depth. He has some experience in the Cleveland Indians organization as well as in the independent American Association and the Can-Am League.

The Pirates have purchased the contract of catcher Dwight Childs from the Independent League, this according to Kayla Thompson of Indy Ball Island.

Childs was an 18th round selection of the Cleveland Indians in 2009. He played his first four seasons in the Indians organization, before signing on with the Independent League’s St. Paul Saints in 2013. Childs returned to St. Paul last year, and also played for the New Jersey Jackals. In his two seasons playing Independent ball, he had a .596 OPS in 140 games, while throwing out 33% of baserunners. Childs will likely serve as a backup catcher for either High A Bradenton or AA Altoona.

Former Trinidad Trigger, James Hall, Dies in Crash

Former Trinidad Triggers player, James Hall, was killed in a motorcycle crash Sunday night in Aurora, CO.

James played for the 2013 Triggers and was featured on The Pecos League reality show which I have covered extensively on this blog. When not on the field, he was often shown as one of the biggest cheerleaders for his teammates.

Although I did not have the pleasure of getting to know James personally outside of the TV show, I know many of his teammates and friends. Their postings on social media show what a truly special gentleman the world has lost too early.

I would like to extend my deepest condolences to James Hall’s family, friends, and teammates. May he rest in peace.
